Responsible Travel Policy

Last Updated: 19 May 2026

1. Our Philosophy

At Hunak Journeys, we believe travel should go beyond consumption, speed, and spectacle.

We see meaningful travel as an opportunity to:

  • encounter different ways of living,

  • develop deeper cultural understanding,

  • support local communities,

  • reconnect with nature,

  • and experience places with humility, curiosity, and respect.

Our journeys are intentionally designed around small groups, carefully designed rhythms, authentic local partnerships, and immersive experiences in remote and culturally rich environments.

Whether crossing desert landscapes, spending time with local communities, or sharing meals under open skies, we aim to create journeys that are both transformative for travellers and respectful toward the people and places that host us.

2. Commitment to Local Partnerships

Hunak Journeys is built around collaboration with trusted local partners.

Our expeditions and experiences are delivered through carefully selected local guides, drivers, hosts, camel handlers, and service providers who:

  • own or directly manage the services they provide,

  • possess deep knowledge of their environment and culture,

  • and share Hunak’s values regarding safety, hospitality, and responsible travel.

Rather than replacing local expertise, Hunak exists to support, coordinate, and elevate local-led experiences through long-term partnerships built on mutual respect and trust.

Whenever possible, we prioritise:

  • locally owned accommodations,

  • local transportation providers,

  • locally sourced food and supplies,

  • and direct economic contribution to local communities.

We believe responsible tourism should create meaningful local value and foster genuine cultural exchange.

3. Cultural Respect and Human Dignity

We encourage travellers to approach each destination with:

  • openness,

  • humility,

  • patience,

  • and cultural sensitivity.

The communities and environments we visit are not products or attractions. They are living cultures, homes, traditions, and ways of life deserving of respect.

We ask all travellers to:

  • respect local customs, traditions, and dress expectations,

  • behave respectfully toward local people and communities,

  • avoid disruptive or culturally insensitive behaviour,

  • and remain mindful that they are guests within environments that may differ significantly from their own.

Hunak Journeys does not tolerate:

  • discriminatory behaviour,

  • harassment,

  • exploitative attitudes,

  • or disrespect toward local cultures, religions, or communities.

4. Ethical Photography and Storytelling

Photography and storytelling are powerful ways to preserve memories and share experiences. However, they must always be approached with sensitivity and respect.

We encourage travellers to:

  • ask permission before photographing individuals whenever appropriate,

  • remain aware of local customs regarding photography,

  • avoid intrusive or disrespectful filming practices,

  • and prioritise human dignity over social media content.

Hunak Journeys strongly discourages:

  • exploitative portrayals of poverty or hardship,

  • sensationalised representations of local communities,

  • performative behaviour designed solely for online exposure,

  • and any content that may disrespect local traditions, sacred places, or individuals.

We believe meaningful travel should foster understanding rather than objectification.

5. Environmental Responsibility

Many of the environments we explore are ecologically fragile and vulnerable to increasing tourism pressure.

Hunak Journeys is committed to minimising environmental impact and preserving the integrity of the landscapes we visit.

We strive to:

  • follow Leave No Trace principles,

  • minimise waste generation,

  • reduce unnecessary plastic use,

  • avoid environmental degradation,

  • respect wildlife and natural habitats,

  • and operate low-impact expeditions whenever possible.

Travellers are expected to actively participate in preserving the cleanliness and integrity of the environments we explore.

Our objective is simple:
to leave places exactly as we found them — or better.

6. Animal Welfare

Certain expeditions may involve the use of animals, particularly camels, as part of traditional desert travel and logistical support systems.

Hunak Journeys recognises the cultural and practical importance of these animals within the communities we work with.

We are committed to partnering only with local operators and handlers who demonstrate responsible and respectful treatment of animals.

We aim to avoid practices involving:

  • mistreatment,

  • overloading,

  • neglect,

  • unnecessary suffering,

  • or exploitative conditions.

Where concerns regarding animal welfare arise, we reserve the right to reassess or discontinue collaboration with specific providers.

7. Responsible Traveller Participation

Responsible travel is a shared responsibility between organisers, local partners, and travellers themselves.

By joining a Hunak Journey, travellers agree to:

  • respect local cultures and environments,

  • follow guidance from local teams and guides,

  • behave responsibly toward fellow travellers and communities,

  • and contribute positively to the atmosphere and integrity of the experience.

We believe the quality of a journey depends not only on the destination, but also on the mindset and behaviour brought into it.

8. Continuous Improvement

Hunak Journeys recognises that responsible tourism is an ongoing learning process.

As our operations grow, we remain committed to continuously improving:

  • our environmental practices,

  • our local partnerships,

  • our operational standards,

  • and the long-term positive impact of our journeys.

We welcome constructive feedback from travellers, partners, and local communities to help us evolve responsibly.
